A Symposium Honoring the Centenary of Rockwell Kent's Monhegan Home
The Monhegan Museum is marking the 100th anniversary of Rockwell Kent's
house on Monhegan Island, Maine, in July 2007. The event will be sponsored
by the Monhegan Museum and Plattsburgh State Art Museum, Rockwell Kent
Gallery Collections. The date for this event is Friday -Saturday July 27-28, 2007.
The event will be celebrated with a presentation of papers, given at the school
house on Monhegan Island, focusing on Kent's artwork and his life on the Island.
Also included will be tours of the Kent house, a presentation of the Frederick
Lewis documentary on Rockwell Kent, and a tour of the Monhegan Museum on
Lighthouse Hill, where the annual gallery exhibition will include Kent’s c. 1950 work
“Wreck of the D.T. Sheridan.”

- “Bibliographical Notes on Kent’s Jewel – An Editor’s Memoir” by Eliot Stanley
- “We shall have no art but what our cultural soil will yield: Homeland and Nationalism in the art of Rockwell Kent” by Elizabeth McGoey.
- “Big Prayers to God: Rockwell Kent’s Monhegan” by Ronald Bernier
- “Call me Kent: The Illustrations of Melville’s Moby Dick” by Constance Martin.
- “The Rockwell Kent – James Fitzgerald Letters: An Historical Context for the Sale of Kent’s Monhegan Cottage” by Robert Stahl.
- “Saving our artistic legacy: Kent’s home/studio and other preserved artists’ places” by Stephen May
- “Kents or Non-Kents?: The Role of Connoisseurship, Research, and Analysis in the Attribution of the Monhegan Mystery Paintings."– Panel discussion led by Richard West, with Ed Brohel, Scott Ferris, and James Hamm.
- Other presentation, title pending: Valerie Livingston
- “Rockwell Kent,” the documentary film by Frederick Lewis, will be shown on Friday evening.
